Plaza del Arenal
The current nerve centre of the city. In Islamic times, it was a space outside the city walls. At the corner of Calle Consistorio stood one of the four gates of the wall, the Puerta del Real. Over the centuries, it hosted festivals and public spectacles such as equestrian games and bullfights. At its centre stands an equestrian monument representing Miguel Primo de Rivera, the work of Mariano Benlliure. The Los Arcos building, a former grain exchange and bakery, dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Opposite, the flamenco neighbourhood of San Miguel begins, whose church stands out for its Gothic architecture and rich interior featuring a Baroque altarpiece by Martínez Montañés and José de Arce.
