Basílica de Ntra. Sra. de la Merced

The Basilica of la Merced is located in the Plaza de la Merced and has an outstanding collection of altarpieces, sculptures, liturgical elements and ornaments. Within the church, dating from 1268, stands the figure of the Virgen de la Merced, patron saint of the city.

The Portuguese architect Fernando Álvarez began work on the main cloister in 1548, traditional gothic architecture evident in its vaults and renaissance in the pillars of its cloisters. The façade was constructed in the 17th century, work of Fernández Calafate. It has a bell gable and within its interior an outstanding main altarpiece, work of Francisco Dionisio de Ribas.
