La Merced Basilica

The La Nuestra Señora de la Merced Basilica is a church of Gothic origin, expanded between the 17th and 18th centuries with Baroque elements. It is dedicated to the patron saint of Jerez, the Virgen de la Merced Coronada, whose feast day is celebrated each year on 24 September. The church features a beautiful doorway and a gilded main altarpiece framing the image of the Virgin, surrounded by angels, Mercedarian saints, and vegetal motifs. The church, declared a minor basilica in 2018, is one of the most important centres of devotion in the city, a symbol of faith and hope for the people of Jerez.
