Basílica del Carmen
The Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a church with an attached Carmelite convent, dating from the second half of the 17th century. It is located in the San Dionisio neighborhood.
The Carmelite Order was the first order to establish itself within the walled area of Jerez after the Conquest. They were initially established in 1587 in the old Benedictine convent, outside the city walls. Shortly after, in 1600, they moved to their current location, where a chapel was built prior to the current church. The Basilica is part of the only monastery that was created within the walls.
The main facade dates from 1731. It has a single tower of the two that were originally planned to be built. It features lavish decoration, highlighting the arches, pilasters, Corinthian columns, and stone vases. In the niche, there is an image of the Virgin of Mount Carmel.
With a square plan, it is composed of three naves.
