Built between the second half of the 16^th century and the beginning of the 18^th century, it originates, as does the Yedra chapel, from a Shrine Cross which stood outside the city walls, opposite the Puerta Real.

Shrine crosses were religious crosses placed outside cities and alongside main thoroughfares, thus allowing travellers to give thanks for the protection received after arriving safe and sound at their destination.
