The San Mateo Church, situated in the heart of the neighbourhood of the same name, is one of the six founded by Alfonso X the Wise following the Reconquest, built on the sites of former mosques. Gothic in style with Renaissance and Baroque additions, it was constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries. San Mateo reflects the prosperity of a community in which winemaking families financed churches and works of art.
