Iglesia de Santo Domingo

Monumentos religiosos

Built in the 13th century after the reconquest of the city by Alfonso X the Wise. Its historic importance lies in the fact that it is one of the first churches to be constructed outside the city walls.

Its interior contains outstanding mudéjar vaults, a baroque altarpiece and the Nuestra Sra. de la Consolación chapel with its plateresque front piece and gothic cloisters.

It underwent a major transformation after the Mendizábal expropriations when, amongst other things, the cloisters were turned over to civil use.

The convent and church of Santo Domingo are an architectural jewel of the city’s heritage. Its architecture combines mudéjar, gothic and renaissance elements. The main altarpiece is a baroque work by Francisco Antonio de Soto.
