The Alcázar de Jerez is one of the oldest monumental jewels of the city. Built by the Almohads in the 12th century, it served as a fortress and residence for Muslim governors. Following the Christian conquest, it became the seat of political power and a symbol of the new faith. Its irregular layout and defensive towers reveal its military function, while inside, the mosque, the Arab baths, and the Baroque Palacio de Villavicencio offer a striking contrast. The complex, restored and open to visitors, allows one to understand the historical and artistic evolution of Jerez. From the top of its towers, the entire city can be seen, serving as a reminder that this enclave was for centuries a symbol of power and the nerve centre of life in Jerez.
